About Cardinal Tavern
The Cardinal Tavern has a long history in the Canton community.
Owned by Alice Visilia, Cardinal Tavern is a family-friendly neighborhood bar serving up good pub grub along with classic Greek specialties! Alice is the 5th owner of Cardinal Tavern, and one who doesn’t shy away from a challenge.
As a single mother to a young boy, Cardinal is the second bar Alice has owned and operated. Like so many difficulties in 2020, Alice navigated the hardships of lockdowns and COVID-related restrictions with expert tact. Officially opening Cardinal Tavern under her ownership to the public in the midst of Baltimore City’s second COVID lockdown.
Cardinal Tavern is a place for the community and a place that will continue to thrive while serving up good food and drinks to great people.
Our team is the heart and soul of the cardinal. We strive to create a warm and welcoming environment where you can relax, unwind and enjoy yourself.
Cardinal Tavern in the media
Alice Visilia’s timing couldn’t have been worse. The day after she took ownership of Canton’s Cardinal Tavern on December 10, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott decreed that all bars and restaurants could no longer offer indoor service, even at a limited capacity, and could remain open for carryout and delivery only. So, carryout and delivery it was for Visilia, who has never been one to let a little speedbump in life slow her down. She started working at Mahaffey’s Pub as a bartender in 2007 before eventually rising to become a co-owner in 2018.
The new owner of Canton's Cardinal Tavern is a seasoned veteran of the neighborhood's bar scene. Alice Kistner, the former co-owner of Mahaffey's Pub on Dillon Street, is moving on to a new project. She recently purchased the Cardinal Tavern and plans to reopen the neighborhood bar next week. One of Kistner's first changes to the tavern was to repaint its cardinal-red doors with a shade of teal. But she said she plans to keep the Cardinal's community-focused, corner-bar vibe alive.
